The reading challenge

You’ve rolled the dice and moved your romancepoly playing piece and have found yourself lurking in Fang Alley. For this reading challenge we have two choices:

  • Read any paranormal book of your choosing; or,
  • Read a paranormal where one of the main characters is a vampire

Opening the coffin on vampire romance

Whether your vampire needs to sleep in a coffin or a regal four poster bed with red silk sheets I know one thing: I can’t resist a vampire hero or heroine. Although…I do prefer the bed. These darkly seductive characters are mesmerising and seem to pull out all of our most deeply buried and kinkiest desires. There seems to be a long history of vampires being the broody anti-hero and the person you know is bad for you…yet you can’t resist them.

There is such a breadth of literature with vampire characters, and although paranormal romance is certainly a favourite here, vampires are also liberally scattered through the horror, fantasy and classic fiction genres. The Fang Alley challenge can go in a lot of different directions. The vampire main character could range from an evil irredeemable monster to sexy broody hero who just needs some lovin’ to unlock their dead heart. The choice is yours!

Vampire romance books to sink your fangs into…

Although you can pick any book with a vampire characters for the Fang Allet challenge, we are romance lovers at heart. That means that we have put together a list of the vampire romance books we have loved or are next up on our TBR!

Publisher’s synopsis

Three Powerfully Alluring Vampire Men
And One Queen to Rule Them All

All Mina ever wanted was to escape her father’s control. Half human, half vampire, she lived eternally torn between two worlds, never fully experiencing the pleasures of either—until her father chose her as the pawn in his latest political move, gifting her to the darkly powerful and dangerously seductive Malachi Zion.

Malachi is not a vampire to be trifled with. He rules with an iron fist and has a reputation for the darkest of sins. But the longer Mina spends with him, the more she realizes he’s not the monster she first thought—and as fear bleeds into lust, then trust, then something more, Malachi opens Mina up to a world she never knew could be hers for the taking: including the love of Malachi’s two closest friends and companions.

Now surrounded by all three men, the center of their shockingly seductive world, Mina may finally have the power to face down her father and take back the life—and crown—that by all rights should be hers.

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN.

Publisher’s synopsis

I threw a paper airplane love note from my window.

First mistake.

I aimed it at a gorgeous stranger and put my address on it.

Second mistake.

Yep. You guessed it. I missed and hit a werewolf instead. Best thing that ever happened to me?

Next thing I knew, a large angrily attractive werewolf man was trying to get in my apartment. I introduced him to my baseball bat and figured that was the end of things.

Or not.

Because my well-meaning sister became a vampire to cure my immune disorder.

Long story.

In the process, she got a deadly team of fang bangers to hunt us for breaking their rules.

Longer story. A+ for good intentions and a D- for execution, if you ask me.

Re-enter Mr. Grumpy and Growly werewolf. He’s going to be my bodyguard slash kidnapper, whether I like it or not. Apparently, he’s the only thing standing between me and certain death. Swoon, right?

Of course, he hates all things vampire. A.K.A. he will take me from undead to dead-dead if he figures out what I’m becoming.

Thankfully, he has completely underestimated my ability to woo him with my adorable innocence, cheery disposition, and extreme powers of modesty.

As long as the feelings stay one-sided, I’ll be fine. Because giving your heart to a guy who is probably going to try to murder you is a recipe for disaster. And come on. When was the last time I made a catastrophic, life-threatening mistake?

Publisher’s synopsis

Things are finally looking up for Madison. After years of scraping just to get by she lands her dream job and finally has a decent down payment for a house so she can move her brother and sister into a real home. It’s too bad nothing ever goes the way it’s supposed to. When the mother that abandoned them years ago suddenly shows up and moves them to New Hampshire Madison has no choice but to go or lose her brother and sister.

Shoving her dreams aside yet again, Madison tries to make things work. It’s really cold, her fifteen year old sister acts like a hooker in training, men act funny around her, her boss is a real jerk, she feels like an outsider, her best friend turns out to be a sixteen year old punk, and the incredibly handsome guy renting the room adjoining hers not only hogs the bathroom, taking three showers a day leaving her with cold water, but he also has a secret. A secret that she becomes a bit obsessed with and can’t let go no matter how many times she’s warned off.

Next door…

Detective Ephraim Williams learned long ago not to show any emotion or allow himself to get attached to humans. What was the point? They came and went and he remained. This time wouldn’t be any different or so he thought. When his landlady told him her grandchildren were moving in he didn’t expect much, well other than to be left alone. What he didn’t expect was to have to fight bloodlust every time he so much as caught a whiff of his delectable neighbor’s scent or her bombarding him with questions every time she cornered him.

If that’s not bad enough a Master from his past has found him once again and is demanding his blood and is willing to do anything to get it, even using the exasperating neighbor that makes him feel more than pain for the first time in centuries.

Publisher’s synopsis

Single (plus size) vampire, desperately in search of a life.

Twenty-five year old Lily Baines is used to waking up hungover, overweight, and underemployed. Waking up with fangs? Not so much. But when a little light necking has more serious consequences than she ever imagined, Lily’s determined to get to the bottom of it, or die (again) trying.

Tristan hadn’t meant to turn Lily—it’s against vampire law—but now that she’s here, they need to team up to save both their hides. They strike an uneasy truce, fending off other vampires, Lily’s work-rival-turned-slayer, and her mother’s tone-deaf romance and fitness advice…all while Lily faces down her insecurities about the fact that she lives in a diet-obsessed world with a body that will never age, never die, and never change.

Falling for her maddeningly gorgeous sire? Easy. Surviving an ancient vampire Master determined to see her twice-dead? Piece of cake. But can Lily ever truly learn to love the woman she’ll be forever more?

When cellist Thea literally stumbles into his life at a gala, he knows she’s the last person he could ever fall in love with. She’s too innocent, too kind, and way too human. So, Julian makes Thea an irresistible offer: pretend to be his lover and he’ll change her life. For one year, they’ll attend the season’s social events together in exchange for his protection and a way out of her mother’s crippling medical debt.

She can’t say no. But the vampire world is impossibly decadent and darker than Thea ever imagined, and Julian’s filthy rich vampire family wants her out of the way. Publisher’s synopsis

When Violet inexplicably wakes thousands of years after a nuclear holocaust, she finds the world very different. Fae exist now. They’re vicious, animalistic monsters who pervert magic and can morph into any shape—including vampires. They hoard the bounty of the new world, and keep humans banished to the wasteland. At least, that’s what the humans of today have told her. Determined to make up for an unforgivable mistake in her past, she becomes a covert assassin and seeks revenge for her human brethren. And she’s good at it. But when the thing she hunts saves her life, injuring himself in the process… her crystal clarity suddenly becomes blurry.

Vampires are meant to be monsters, not protectors… not charismatic, annoyingly handsome and loyal and… everything.

Indigo is a Fae Guardian, and a ruthless vampire protector of Elphyne. The Order has tasked him with finding a human with deadly secrets before the unhinged Unseelie Queen, or the fanatical human leader, can exploit her. They chose him for one reason, and one reason only – the taste of human blood does things to him. Addictive, dark, insatiable things. And when he catches Violet’s scent, they know he’ll do everything in his power to covet her and keep her safe. But Indigo hides his own shameful secret in the shadows of his heart, and if it ever comes to light, Violet will never trust him. She’ll kill him.

Publisher’s synopsis

Remy Pendergast is many things: the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne (though his father might wish otherwise), an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires, and an outcast among his fellow Reapers. His mother was the subject of gossip even before she eloped with a vampire, giving rise to the rumors that Remy is half-vampire himself. Though the kingdom of Aluria barely tolerates him, Remy’s father has been shaping him into a weapon to fight for the kingdom at any cost.

When a terrifying new breed of vampire is sighted outside of the city, Remy prepares to investigate alone. But then he encounters the shockingly warmhearted vampire heiress Xiaodan Song and her infuriatingly arrogant fiancé, vampire lord Zidan Malekh, who may hold the key to defeating the creatures—though he knows associating with them won’t do his reputation any favors. When he’s offered a spot alongside them to find the truth about the mutating virus Rot that’s plaguing the kingdom, Remy faces a choice.

It’s one he’s certain he’ll regret.

But as the three face dangerous hardships during their journey, Remy develops fond and complicated feelings for the couple. He begins to question what he holds true about vampires, as well as the story behind his own family legacy. As the Rot continues to spread across the kingdom, Remy must decide where his loyalties lie: with his father and the kingdom he’s been trained all his life to defend or the vampires who might just be the death of him.

What I’m reading…

a-discovery-of-witches-deborah-harkness

I love a vampire romance book, they were some of the first paranormal romance books I ever read way back in the day. So, when I landed on Fang Alley, I was pretty excited. It’s been ages since I’ve read anything vampy. And, now I am even more excited having chosen A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. Although it’s not quite a paranormal romance, it is a book that has been on my TBR for a long time.

It also has a TV show based on that I’ve held off watching as I didn’t want to spoil the books. So, now I have a double whammy ahead of me: the book and then the TV show. Both of which I have been told are excellent. Right guys, I’m off, I need to stock up on snacks for my All Souls marathon!

Pin it for later!
